Data Communications Short Questions and Answers. This is the 2nd post for ICS Part-I | 1st Year Computer Science Chapter No.3. The given short questions along with answers on data communication and networking are important for the final exams.


We tried our best to make the important short questions and answers from this chapter (Data Communications). Q.1: What is Half Duplex mode?

Answer:

In half-duplex transmission, data can be sent and received in both directions, but not at the same time. Examples of half-duplex mode are internet surfing and walkie talkie etc.

 

Q.2: What is Full Duplex transmission mode?

Answer:

In full-duplex mode, data can be transmitted in both directions simultaneously. The full-duplex transmission provides a faster mode of data communication as no time is wasted in changing directions of data transmission. Telephone systems and mobile communication are examples of full-duplex mode.

 

Q.3: Define parallel transmission?

Answer:

In digital communication, the simultaneous transmission of related bits of data over two or more separate paths is called parallel transmission. Several bits are transmitted simultaneously using 8, 16, 32, 64, etc. lines. Data communication within a computer system is a parallel transmission.

 

Q.4: Define serial transmission?

Answer:

Transmitting data one bit at a time is called serial transmission. In this transmission, bits flow in a continuous stream, i.e., one bit is transmitted after the other through the communication channel. This method is used in communications networks to carry data over long distances.

 

Q.5: What is Asynchronous Transmission?

Answer:

Asynchronous transmission is also known as start/stop transmission. In this transmission, data is transmitted character by character. The time interval between the two characters is not fixed. Each character is transmitted along with additional special bits, so this method is suitable for transmission at a low transmission rate.

 

Q.6: What is Synchronous Transmission?

Answer:

In synchronous transmission, the transmitter and receiver are synchronized by using a timing device. It allows several bytes to be transmitted without the need for sending extra start and stop bits for each packet. This method is, therefore, more suited for transmitting large volumes of data at a high rate from one computer to another.

 

Q.7: What is bandwidth?

Answer:

Bandwidth is the capacity of a communication medium to carry data. each communication medium has a maximum capacity at which it can carry data. different types of communication media have different bandwidths.

 

Q.8: Differentiate between Baseband and Broadband?

Answer:

Baseband: Digital signals are commonly called baseband signals. It is a communications technique in which digital signals are placed onto the transmission line without a change in modulation.

Broadband: Broadband is a technique for transmitting large amounts of data over long distances by modulation. Broadband media transmit signals at a much faster speed than baseband media.

 

Q.9: What is communication media?

Answer:

Communication media means through which data is transferred from one place to another. There are two categories of transmission media used in data communications i.e. guided media and unguided media.

 

Q.10: Define Guided Media OR Bounded Media?

Answer:

Guided or Bounded media are the physical devices in which signals are confined to a narrow path. These consist of various types of wires i.e.

  • Twisted Pair Cable
  • Coaxial Cable
  • Fiber Optic Cable

 

Q.11: Write some advantages of Fiber Optic cable?

Answer:

  • Capability of carrying significantly more signals
  • Faster data transmission
  • Less susceptible to noise form other devices
  • Better security
  • Smaller size

 

Q.12: Define Unguided Media OR Unbounded Media?

Answer:

Unguided or Unbounded media are natural parts of the environment that can be used to transfer signals in the form of waves. They do not guide them along a specific path and are therefore also called unbounded media. These are:

  • Microwave Transmission
  • Satellite Communication
  • Mobile Communication

 

Q.13: Write advantages and disadvantages of satellite communication?

Answer:

Advantages:

  • The large volume of data can be transmitted
  • Data can be transmitted to distant locations

Disadvantages:

  • Bad weather affects
  • Less secure


Q.14: What is Modem?

Answer:

Modem (Modulate / Demodulate) is a device that converts digital signals into analog form (modulation) to send over phone lines, a receiving modem at the other end of phone line then converts the analog signal back toa digital signal (demodulation).

 

Q.15: Differentiate between Modem Transmission Rate and Modem Speeds?

Answer:

Transmission Rate: It means how many bits per second a modem is capable of transmitting or receiving.

Speeds: This technique is used to encode the digital bits into analog signals is called modulation process. The various modulation standards define the exact methods of encoding and the data transfer speed.

 

Q.16: What is external modem?

Answer:

The external modem is the external unit of the computer and is connected to the computer through a serial port. Like an internal modem, it is also linked to the telephone lines through a telephone jack. These are expensive, have more operational features, and offer high transmission speed.

 

Q.17: What is internal modem?

Answer:

The internal modem fits into the expansion slots inside the computer. It is directly linked to the telephone line through a telephone jack. It is less expensive and speed is slower as compared to an external modem.

 

Q.18: What is wireless modem?

Answer:

A wireless modem consists of a modem and an antenna. It transmits and receives over the air. It is used for handhelds and mobile phones. This is also used with laptops and desktop computers for connecting to a wireless LAN.
